We are thrilled to have recently wrapped up our Math unit on Understanding and Comparing Fractions. Students are continuing to learn about telling time! In math, students have worked hard at understanding fractions. Students discussed and learned about where they see fractions in their everyday life outside of school. Many students determined that we use fractions when cooking or baking, and worked together to use fraction tiles to understand how each unit fraction is broken up into equal parts. From there, students were able to determine the fraction represented in various types of problems. After gaining a deeper understanding of fractions and identifying fractional parts, students used fraction tiles to explore and identify equivalent fractions, realizing that ½ has many equivalent fractions. By determining the equivalent fractions, students were then able to compare fractions to one another. For instance, they were able to identify if the fraction was greater than, less than, or equal to one another. Students have worked hard on the fraction math unit!
Currently, students are working on Time and Measurement, where they learned how to tell time to the nearest minute and five minutes. Students also learned different ways to express time to the nearest fifteen minutes, half hour, and forty five minutes. In addition, students learned how to solve problems involving elapsed time. For instance, students had to determine end times, how much time has elapsed, and the start time. Students used the “Mountain, Hill, and Rock Number Line Strategy” to help them with elapsed time. Next, students will continue learning about measurement and finally, move onto geometry! We are so proud of them for their hard work!
